This Spoils the Ending
In the Book In the TV Show
This does not happen in the book. Duke has to hire two more men to deliver a shipment because the three men Reacher killed did not show up for work. He offers to make the delivery, but Zachary tells him to escort his son Richard while shopping.
This does not happen in the book. Richard tells Reacher that Quinn is Zachary Beck’s boss. Reacher presses Richard for information on his dad’s business, but he says his dad only sells rugs.
Reacher is told to bring Elizabeth Beck shopping to keep them both out of the way during a big shipment. Paulie harasses/gropes Elizabeth on a routine basis and her husband is powerless to stop it as Paulie works for Zachary Beck’s boss. He makes her carry a pager inside of her panties so he can summon her when he wants to abuse her. Paulie is unable to rape her as he is impotent from steroid abuse. Elizabeth thinks Reacher is police, but he denies it. Richard is mocked/threatened by three former high school classmates who have fallen on hard times due to Beck’s business. Reacher beats them all severely. Reacher offers Richard a chance to escape, but he has to tell him about his father’s business. He says Julius Quinn runs everything. Quinn and Paulie are the ones who originally kidnapped Richard and forced Beck to run contraband within his rug import business.
While Eizabeth Beck is shopping, Reacher meets Duffy at a motel; they have sex. Duffy regrets it, Reacher does not. They discuss how to move forward on the operation. This does not happen in the TV series.
Duke tracks down Angel Doll’s house near Hartford, CT. Reacher and Duke raid the house while Beck waits in the car. Reacher holds Duke at gunpoint and demands to know where Teresa Daneil is. Duke does not answer so Reacher murders him. He then empties the magazines of his and Duke’s rifles into the house and runs back to Beck telling him that it was an ambush, Duke was killed and the others got away. Reacher tells Beck that one of the people in the house dropped a pistol; Reacher hands Beck Angel Doll’s gun. Beck is convinced that Angel Doll betrayed him. Reacher is promoted to Beck’s head of security. Reacher tells Agent Duffy that a big shipment is coming in. Agent Duffy uses Angel Doll’s laptop to send a message to Beck containing the address of a house that the kidnappers were using. It is a trap so Reach can get rid of Duke. Beck and Duke tell Recher they’re going after the men who kidnapped Richard after getting Angel Doll’s (Duffy’s) e-mail. Reacher retrieves Angel Doll’s pistol he hid near the sea cliff. Upon reaching the house, Duke and Reacher enter. Reacher disarms Duke and demands information on Teresa Daniels; Duke refuses and Reacher murders him. Reacher sets fire to the house with gas from the gas stove. Reacher gives Beck Angel Doll’s gun; Beck is convinced that Angel Doll betrayed him. Beck promotes Reacher to replace Duke.
