Shane drives Maya and Izzabella to Judith Burkett’s house. Maya enters the house while Shane guards Izzabella and her brother. Shane drives Izabella and her brother out of the city and abandons them on the road so they will not be able to bother them for a while.
Maya tracked down Christopher Swain’s e-mail and sends him a message. Later, he calls her and asks Maya to meet him at his rehab center. Swain tells Maya that Joe was a monster who attacked boys he felt threatened by. Swain says they tied Theo down to make him chug beer, but Joe switched to grain alcohol. Joe forced Andrew to help him put Theo’s body in the school basement after he died. Weeks later while they were out on the yacht, Andrew said he wanted them to confess to causing Theo’s death. Later on, Andrew went topside on the yacht, Joe followed him. Swain thinks Joe pushed Andrew overboard. Judith gives Maya the name of the most exclusive rehab center in the area, so she can track down Christopher Swain after he was arrested for multiple DUI’s but never prosecuted. Maya finds him in rehab where he tells her that Joe murdered Andrew. Swain goes on to explain that they forced vodka down Theo Maro’s throat which caused him to die. Swain claims Joe killed Andrew to stop him from confessing to killing Theo.
These subplots are not in the book. There is a subplot concerning DS Sami Kierce’s past as a recovering alcoholic (his fiancée was murdered) and serious health problems that he is trying to keep a secret from everyone including his upcoming marriage to his pregnant girlfriend. He periodically passes out at home, while working and driving which caused a minor accident. He is taking Burkett corporation medications that might be causing his medical problems.
The book is entirely from the point of view of Maya Stern in chapters 1 to 33. Chapter 34, which is set 25 years later, is from Shane’s point of view. The TV series is in the point of view of various characters.
Maya is unable to put a tracker on a red car she has spotted following her in the past. She eventually follows the car and finds Corey Rudzinski is the driver. He brings her back to the strip club to talk to her about his activities. Corey says Claire was giving him information on Burkett industries medical fraud in exchange for not releasing the audio on Maya’s actions that caused the death of civilians during combat. Maya is able to put a tracker on the red car that was following her. While in the helicopter with a student, Maya tracks the car on her phone and lands near where its parked in the forest. She searches on foot, then is assaulted and detained by two men who bring her to talk to Corey Rudzinski. Corey says Claire was giving him information on Burkett industries medical fraud in exchange for not releasing the audio on Maya’s actions that caused the death of civilians during combat.
