In the Book In the Movie
Westley is attacked by three R.O.U.S. He intentionally rolls onto a fire spurt and the flames scare the rodents away. He grabs his knife and throws it at one of the rats. The other two leave Westley alone and start to eat the dead rodent of unusual size. Westley is worried the blood from his wound will attract more rats, so he packs it with mud. A single R.O.U.S. attacks Westley. He wrestles with it. It starts to go after Buttercup and Westley grabs it from behind and they struggle. Westley is bitten on the shoulder and then he hears the popping noise indicating the fire spurt. He rolls the rat over and it catches fire. He stands up and stabs the rat a few times as it burns to make sure it is dead. Westley doesn't worry about his shoulder attracting more rats.
The Man in Black is distracted by Prince Humperdinck's armada firing its cannons in the distance when Buttercup pushes him into the ravine. He sees Humperdinck's horses in the distance when she pushes him.
Prince Humperdinck tells Westley to surrender after they leave the fire swamp. Westley refuses. He says, "No one is surrendering." After Humperdinck says surrender, Westley says, "You mean you wish to surrender to me? Very well, I accept."
After promising to save Westley, Humperdinck tells Count Rugen to put him in the fifth level of the Zoo of Death. He tells him to throw him in the pit of despair.
Westley is held in the fifth level of the Zoo of Death for over a month. He is tortured by the Count in many different ways including his hands being set on fire and covered in spiders, before the Machine is finished. He is held in the pit of despair for less time and the only torture is faces is from the Machine.
