The changes made for a better visual experience with the new movie. Things like Harriet's Bible for example already having the passages underlined would be something too obvious for a detective to miss in the initial investigation. Its a prime example that not everything written is well conceived for visual presentation. Also no adaptation should be exactly like its source material, that makes for a banal and uninspired visual experience.
