Salvor Hardin and Gaal Dornick are male. Eto Demerzel (one of Daneel Olivaw's personas) does not appear in Foundation, but does appear in the prequels, sequels and Robot novels Salvor Hardin and Gaal Dornick are female. Eto Demerzel (robot, female) appears as the Emporer's majordomo.
Cleon plays a very minor role in the novel and prequels. The Imperial Cleon dynasty is a major subplot involving clones of the original Clean ruling Trantor for over 400 years.
Starships move away from planetary systems for several days to avoid adverse gravitational influence prior to the jump through hyperspace. Passengers and crew simply sit and wait for the instantaneous jump to happen. Starship passengers are prepared for the jump through hyperspace by being cocooned in webbing and put asleep. The Jump takes place near a planetary system and lasts for a certain period of time.
Except for a small group on Trantor that grow food for a living, there are no Spacers (long-life humans with robot society) living in the Empire anymore as their culture became extinct thousands of years ago. Spacers (engineered for space travel) man the ship. They have an inhuman appearance.
Starships typically land at spaceports on the planet surface; sometimes checking in with orbiting entry stations first. Starships dock with the Starbridge, a space elevator that takes passengers to Trantor's surface. The trip down takes 14 hours. Suicide bombers destroy the space elevator connecting the planet surface to space.
Eto Demerzel (Daneel Olivaw) was no longer working for the Emperor just prior to Hari Seldon's arrest and exile. Eto Demerzel is the emperor's majordomo.
Linge Chen and the Committee for Public Safety investigates Dr. Seldon who is known for predicting the end of the Empire. Chen eventually decides to exile his group of people to Terminus (as Seldon had planned) at the outer part of the galaxy instead of making them martyrs. No involvement by the Emperor. Seldon is brought before the Emperor where Seldon says the outer worlds are going to rebel. Gaal tells the Emperor that Seldon is the only hope to shorten the dark ages. Seldon says the fall can be slowed down by a few centuries by ending imperial cloning.
Dr. Seldon was known by the Emperor Cleon I for several decades prior to his exile and worked for him as first minister. The Emperor was murdered by a gardener prior to the events which lead to Dr. Seldon's exile. Seldon insults the Emperor by saying cloning is like the same old grape in the same old bottle.
Seldon's group of people exiled to Terminus numbered 98,572 people. Seldon died on Trantor of old age. All space travel is with hyperspace jump technology. The emperor allows Seldon to continue his work on Terminus in the outer worlds. Seldon and his people travel to Terminus without jump drive technology.
Raych Seldon died during a rebellion on another planet prior to the exile to Terminus. He had a family of his own and is not involved with Dornick. Raych joins Gaal on the trip to Terminus. They are in a romantic relationship. Gaal gets pregnant by Raych and has her fetus stored in a vault for protection from radiation during the trip to Terminus.
Humans (the only intelligent species in the galaxy) all speak Galactic Standard, with regional accents. Some people seem to speak different languages.
Dr. Seldon finished his psychohistory plan prior to his death on Trantor. Gaal installed the recordings of Dr. Seldon in the vault prior to Seldon's death. Gaal says Seldon's plan is not complete.
Eto Demerzel keeps his robotic nature a secret from everyone, except Hari Seldon and a few others. The Emperor's youngest clone knows that Eto Demerzel is not human.
Anacreon successfully non-violently rebelled against the Empire and established control over several local star systems including Terminus. Anacreon and Thespis representatives are executed for the destruction of the Starbridge. Their planets are attacked by Imperial forces.
Dr. Seldon died of old age on Trantor. Gaal finds Raych stabbing Dr. Seldon to death in his quarters. Raych forces Gaal into an escape pod and ejects her into space.
Only the closest associates of Demerzel, including Dr. Seldon (eventually) know he is a robot. The Emperor and other officials do not know. Demerzel routinely manipulates the Imperial family and others to bring about a more stable Galaxy. Pushing Hari Seldon to create the science of pyschohistory is one of his attempted solutions for protecting humanity Cleon knows that Demerzel is not human. She has served them for at least 400 years. She is programmed (or so the Emperor believes) to obey the Imperial dynasty.
The book does not have details on the trip to Terminus. Hyperspace jumps are instantaneous, but it takes many jumps and weeks/months to arrive across the galaxy. Gaal Dornick initially set up the vault and ensured Dr. Seldon's recordings were ready to be viewed in the future. Dr. Seldon's group of exiles arrives on Terminus 17 years after they left Trantor. They see the floating vault and have no idea what it is. People approaching the vault fall unconscious due to a null field around it.
Salvor Hardin is the mayor of Terminus. He opposes the Encyclopedists who are only concerned with gathering data for their encyclopedia to preserve knowledge and bring about a new Empire. Hardin wants to build a new empire directly. Salvor Hardin is a child upon arrival and grows up to be the warden of Terminus. She sees that the null field around the vault is expanding. The null field hurts people who approach it, but it does not injure Hardin when she approaches it. She thinks it is waking up. The Encyclopedists claim they are saving the galaxy from a distant crisis, but Hardin says the crisis is on Terminus.
Terminus is very technologically advanced, but militarily weak. They live in little more than a tent city and primitive buildings made from the remains of their spaceship.
The First Foundationers know the Seldon Plan exists, but do not know the details. One of the postulates of the Plan is that the people subject to it do not know the future in detail. The First Foundation people have a Prime Radiant, but do not know how to use or interpret it.
The Anacreon's come to Terminus peacefully to trade, to establish a military base and make Terminus pay for protection. The local systems are unable to maintain their technology and have lost nuclear power other than for their starships. They want the more advanced Terminus technology to help keep control of the local systems. An Anacreon ship approaches Terminus. The Terminus residents attempt to notify the Empire of the trespass, but their communication system does not work. The Anacreons want Foundation tech and hardware to help get revenge upon the Empire.
Only the Foundation scientists have the capability to produce miniaturized nuclear generators and personal shields. The Emperor wears a personal shield that protects him from all but the lightest touch. Some of the Imperial staff have clocking devices to keep them invisible.
Salvor Hardin is an ordinary person and a skilled politician. Hardin has the ability to sense emotions and occasionally sees visions.
When the local systems around Terminus tried to take control, the Foundationers obtained assurances from the Empire that they could be protected, but it was an empty promise. The Empire does not care at all about the Foundation in its early stages. The Emperor is concerned about loss of communication with Terminus. He sends a starship to check on the com station and on Terminus.
Hyperspace jump technology was developed and in universal use among all populated worlds long before the Empire was established. Hyperspace jump technology is an Imperial secret.
The Anacreon's established a base on Terminus shortly after obtaining independence from the Empire, but Hardin was able to convince other nearby systems to force the Anacreons to leave. The Anacreons never planned on attacking the Empire. The Anacreon's attack Terminus and kill some of its residents. They also establish a tiny base that is destroyed by Salvor Hardin's father shortly after they arrive.
Gaal Dornick was only intended to set up the hologram vault on Terminus, not to be a leader of the 1st Foundation as he was a psychohistorian. Hari had a unit implanted in his brain to record thoughts and memories up until his death. Gaal Dornick was supposed to lead the 1st Foundation through their first crisis.
Hari used his theories to set up the Foundation and periodically guide them through his recorded holograms. Hari Seldon intended his death to galvanize the Foundation population, with him as a god. He was terminally ill and wanted to kill himself.
The 2nd Foundation is already established at Star's End, on Trantor at the Imperial Library. The Second Foundation is to be established at Star's End, on Helicon, Hari Seldon's home planet.
Gaal Dornick never defies Seldon. Gaal Dornick defies Seldon and goes on a 138 year journey to Synnax (her home planet) instead of to Helicon.
No one in the First Foundation is interested in humanity's origin or past, only the present and future. They know nothing about Earth. Salvor Hardin's father discusses the origin of humanity with her. He says humans maybe have originated on Earth or Alpha Centari.
Hardin never kills anyone. Hari Seldon never appears on Terminus except as a projection inside the vault. The conversation is one way from Seldon to the people watching his projection. Hardin kills Phara after she tries to destroy the vault. The vault opens up and Hari Seldon steps out to have a conversation with the people assembled nearby.
The recording of Hari Seldon says the Encyclopedia project was a ruse and that he expects the Foundation to establish control over the local systems including Anacreon while building a new Empire The hologram of Hari Seldon tells the Anacreons, Thespins and Terminus residents that they are to join together and create a new Empire and that the Encyclopedia project was a ruse.
Hardin never sleeps in stasis while traveling and never goes to Dornicks home planet. Selvor Hardin leaves Terminus. Gaal Dornick awakens after her 138 year trip to Synaxx and finds Salvor Hardin on the planet.
Cleon died prior to the Foundation's exile. The Empire never considered the Foundation to be a threat until they wielded considerable power on their far side of the Galaxy much later in the timeline. After an attempt by a subversive movement on Trantor to replace the Empire clones, Cleon suspects that Seldon and the Foundation are a threat.
Eto Demerzel never engages in this kind of activity at all. Eto Demerzel murders the youngest Cleon clone after he is found to be defective. She later goes to her room and starts stripping the skin from her metal skeleton.
