This Spoils the Ending
In the Book In the Movie
Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca becomes the pope for a brief time(pope by public adoration), before he sets himself alight on the balcony of the papal room. The Camerlengo is simply declared dead from internal injury from the parachute drop. In reality, he has been executed by the Vatican police.
Camerlengo tells his company near the end that he visited the necropolis quite often and sat near the real vatican hill, beside the tomb of st. patrick often seeking guidance in matters of life from god himself. He is not shown admitting that he has visited the necropolis quite often. Just simply that the bomb is placed there.
Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca is shown going mad near the end, while the narrator says it was god speaking to him and telling him what to do. Actually, its just a part of the camerlengo's plan. he ACTS as if he has gone mad The Camerlengo is not shown losing his sanity (or acting like he did). He is shown behaving perfectly rationally minded.
It has been mentioned in the book about the camerlengo's mother's death. Who was actually a priestess in the vatican and also, surprisingly, a love interest of the pope. Since they have no way of physically creating a child together(as the pope is bound by vatican laws), the priestess is artificially inseminated with his sperm, and the camerlengo, is in reality, the pope's ACTUAL BIOLOGICAL son. This, is sort of seen as the unison of science and religion, the central theme of the book and the movie. This is what the Camerlengo finds unacceptable, when he finds the truth about his biological parents, that drives him to kill his father, the pope. This revelation never takes place. He is just shown to be adopted at a young age by the pope. He is seen telling vittoria about this while going to the crypt to inspect the pope' tongue. He says his father was murdered 14 days ago. No reference to his mother is made. the reason for his murdering the pope is just that he found that the church was 'softening' due to the pope and his inclination towards science(yes, it was there in the movie too).
The bomb is atop the tomb of st. patrick in necropolis. the bomb has been placed on a wooden plank somewhere else in necropolis
Maximillian Kohler is framed by the Camerlengo when he brands himself. Commander Richter is framed by the Camerlengo when he brands himself
Since Cardinal Baggia dies, the chief elector is elected the new pope Cardinal Baggia never dies. He is elected the new pope
When he dies, Maximillian Kohler hands langdon a webcam in which he has recorded his conversation with the camerlengo. This is seen by langdon in the hospital, and later screened inside the conclave room with all the cardinals AND the camerlengo, who thought it would be his moment of triumph, watching. Only langdon, vittoria, the chief elector, and a handful of other cardinals watch the footage from the camera in the papal office in commander richter's office.
The camerlengo brands himself with the iluuminati diamond, a fifth brand only heard of never seen. it is an ambigram containing the words earth air fire and water arranged in a kite-shape. The brand used by the camerlengo is of two keys, crossed. not the illuminati diamond
The camerlengo brands himself with the iluuminati diamond, a fifth brand only heard of never seen. it is an ambigram containing the words earth air fire and water arranged in a kite-shape. The brand used by the camerlengo is of two keys, crossed. not the illuminati diamond
At the pantheon, robert and vitttoria are interrupted in the heat of finding the first chruch, by a tourist guide who starts narrating to them the story of the pantheon. He tells them the location of Chigi's Chapel. Vittoria points to robert a plate stating that the sculptures were shifted here form another location. Robert asks about the location of the Chigi Chapel to a tourist guide with a separate bunch of tourists
Vittoria is shown to enjoy underwater life and has an interest for deep sea diving. No reference is made to her liking of underwater life.
Robert Langdon and Vittoria Vetra are introduce d to each other at CERN by Maximillian Kohler. They introduce each other (formally) while getting in a car.
There is a news van which is tipped off by the hassassin who follows langdon and the police to the chigi chapel, and then st. peter's square. where the police, almost catch the cameraman, but he runs off with the footage of the dead cardinal with holes in his lungs and the ambigram of Air on his chest. The van and the cameraman and his partner do not exist in the movie.
The events of the book take place BEFORE the events of Da Vinci Code. The events of the movie take place AFTER the Da Vinci Code. This is clarified when the man from the vatican tells langdon that his exploits in the search for the holy grail did not endear him to the vatican (when he was being convinced to help).
The Hassassin is a connoisseur of prostitutes which he will 'take' as a prize after killing, and is aroused by harming others. He plans to rape Vittoria after he kidnaps her but is unsuccessful as Langdon comes to her rescue. None of this detail about the Hassassin is mentioned or seen.
The Hassassin is a dark-skinned Arab Muslim man. The Assassin is a white man.
The fifth brand was a one with all the four brands infused in it,yet it was a perfect ambigram depicting earth, air, fire, water. The firth brand is a symbol of two keys crossed, depicting the pope,i.e the branding of the pope.
IN THE BOOK --WHAT DRIVES THE CAMERLENGO TO KILL THE POPE WAS THAT THE POPE HAD ADMITTED SOMETHING TO HIM THAT HE HAD NEVER BEFORE SHARED, OTHER THAN WITH CARDINAL MORTATI. THE POPE HAD FATHERED A SON. THIS WAS ALL THE CAMERLENGO NEEDED TO KNOW FOR HIM TO KILL THE POPE, AS HE THOUGHT THE POPE HAD BROKEN HIS VOW TO GOD. WITHOUT WANTING TO HEAR THE FULL STORY, THE CAMERLENGO KILLS THE POPE, BUT ONLY IN THE END WHEN CARDINAL MORTATI REVEALS TO HIM THE TRUTH THAT THE POPE HAD NOT REALLY BROKEN HIS VOW AND THAT THE POPE WAS HIS REAL FATHER THROUGH ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION DID THE CAMERLENGO REALIZE WHAT HE HAD DONE.
Leonardo Vetra’s corpse is found in his lab, lying naked on the floor with the Illuminati ambigram branded on his chest. Of note as well, Vetra’s neck had been broken, its bones jutting out of the skin, and it had been twisted 180 degrees so that his face was turned to the floor. His right eye is missing, as it had been physically (and brutally) removed. Father Silvano Bentivoglio’s corpse is lying in the reaction chamber, his right eye missing and a gunshot wound (maybe more) to the right side of his chest.
Leonardo Vetra a scientist at CERN is killed. He is Vittoria Vetra's adoptive father. Silvano Bentivoglio is the scientist from CERN who is killed. He is Vittoria's colleague, but they are not related.
The plane that takes Langdon from Harvard University to Geneva, and brings Langdon and Vittoria to Vatican City goes Mach 15. This super plane is not used.
Vittoria wears short pants while at the Vatican, and it is frowned upon. She is wearing long pants.
The Camerlengo is an Italian. He is from Northern Ireland.
Commander Olivetti is the commandant of the swiss guard. His second in command is Captain Rocher. Commander Richter is the head of the swiss guard.
The assassin contacts members of the BBC to try and control part of the story. This doesn't happen.
Vittoria Vetra is kidnapped by the Hassassin. Vittoria is never kidnapped.
Robert Langdon receives the set of the Illuminati brands and he is asked to return them to the vatican through his last will and testament Robert langdon is given the Galilean Document he needs to complete his book and is asked to return it to the vatican through his last will and testament
Robert Langdon and Vittoria Vetra have a love interest going. they are also shown making love to each other in a hotel room. No love interest is shown between Robert Langdon and Vittoria Vetra. Certainly no intercourse happens.
The fourth cardinal, Cardinal Baggia, is murdered The fourth cardinal, Cardinal Baggia, is saved
Langdon and the Camerlengo enter the helicopter with the antimatter. The Camerlengo locks the antimatter into a cargo box and jumps out of the helicopter with a parachute. Langdon jumps from the exploding helicopter by grabbing a windshield cover and using it as a parachute. The Camerlengo goes up in the Helicopter alone and parachutes down as it explodes above him.
