In the Book In the Movie
The story is told from Katniss's perspective. It is told in the third person so we don't get to hear her thoughts.
Before Katniss goes to prepare for the games she meets many people from her life. Her mother, sister and Gale visit. She also gets cookies from Peeta's father. She is visited by her mother, sister and Gale. Peeta's father never makes an appearance.
Katniss feels a closeness to Rue because she reminds her of her sister. She feels close, but doesn't mention why.
Once Katniss starts the game the focus is solely on her and her survival. During the games we see much of the behind the scenes work done to keep the games interesting. The president takes part and communicates with the Seneca regarding it.
Thresh is murdered. It is assumed that he is killed by Cato. Thresh is killed by the mutant dogs.
