   Richard is a British citizen. He is an American.
   Richard and Francois have feelings for each other but they are never acted upon. Richard sleeps with Francois.
   Richard and Jed go to the mainland to get more rice. Richard and Sal go to the mainland. Jed doesn't appear.
   This doesn't happen. Richard and Sal have sex while on the mainland.
   The third Swede goes crazy and stops eating. Nothing happens
   There are complex tunnels to swim through to get to the boat Not mentioned
   Most of the island get terrible food poisoning which changes the morale of the group and splits the group in to two. Not mentioned
   It is Jed who looks after the Swede in the tent It is Etienne, as Jed's character doesn't exist.
   Richard starts dreaming about Bugs and the dreams are very significant Only happens once and then later when Richard is seen to be going crazy.
   It is seen as ironic that whilst the beach is "paradise" it is frustrating for Richard as he loves Francois but cannot have her. They get together as a couple.
   Sal is an American. She is British.
   This doesn't happen. Richard goes fishing in the rain. On the beach they spot a shark. Richard starts to swim to shore but can't escape the shark. it doesn't attack him. . He stabs and kills the shark.
   The group gets food poisoning when Keatty spears a dead squid. This doesn't happen.
   Christo is left behind in the submerged lagoon after the shark attack. Richard goes to rescue him. Christo makes it back to the beach and Richard follows a trail of blood to find him.
   Sal asks Richard to Kill Karl to help boost morale. Karl is fine.
   Karl attacks Richard and runs off into the jungle. Karl stays.
   the group with Richard's map are beaten and killed. They are not beaten, they are just shot.
   The dead bodies of the surfers are brought by the Thai drug farmers to the Beach and left as a warning. Many of the Beach dwellers go crazy and tear the bodies to pieces. Richard sees the surfers being killed, but their bodies are not mutilated.
   After Sal and others realize that Richard has given a map to others on the mainland, they go crazy and stab Richard. He is saved when Françoise, Étienne, Keaty and Jed return from the beach with fishing spears to drive the others off, wounding Sal and Bugs in the process. Sal is given an ultimatum by the Thai farmers that she must shoot Richard. She tries, but there is no bullet in the gun. Richard is not harmed.
   Richard, Françoise, Étienne, Keaty and Jed all escape the island by taking the raft to the mainland. They leave the rest of the group in madness. After Sal attempts to shoot Richard, everyone loses faith in her and they all leave the island together and go their separate ways.
   Richard does not hear from Francois or Étienne again. He receives an email from Francois with a photo of the group on the Beach.
