This Spoils the Ending
In the Book In the Movie
Andrew becomes a robobiologist; he creates artificial organs that can be used by humans and androids alike so that he may become more human. He sells his inventions to robotic companies. Andrew has his upgrades installed by Rupert Burns; an independent roboticist.
The Martin/Charney family is devoted to Andrew's welfare. The family of Little Miss resent Andrew except for Little Miss's daughter.
While on the moon performing prosthetic research Andrew was treated as a human by the scientists he worked with. This made him want to be more than a de facto human being. Andrew never leaves Earth. He marries Little Miss's granddaughter; he wants his marriage to be officially recognized.
The novel contains few characters outside of Martin and his family. Andrew does not experience emotions but understands them. He "enjoys" making works of art and furniture from wood. These are sold, Andrew is allowed to keep half which he uses for repairs/upgrades that he insists he pays for instead of Sir doing so. A long list of characters only appear in the movie. Andrew jokes and has a (poor) sense of humor. He likes to make furniture from wood.
After Sir's death Andrew starts to wear clothes. After Sir's death Andrew leaves home to search for other NDR's who may be creative like him; he finds none. He only wears clothes after an independent roboticist makes an android body for him.
