Sir takes Andrew to US Robots to ask about his unique artistic abilities. He talks to robopycologist Merton Mansky who is amazed and would like Martin back for study. Sir refuses. Andrew is returned periodically for upgrades and repairs to his body, but his brain is left untouched on Sir's orders. |
Richard Martin brings Martin NorthAm Robotics to repair a finger he damaged. Dennis Mansky, the head of the company wants Andrew back, but Mr. Martin refuses. Richard also tells Mansky that an alarm has been installed to prevent any modifications to his Martin's positronic brain. |
When Andrew asks Sir for his freedom, he offers to buy it. Sir disagrees as the courts might refuse to set Andrew free and take the money he earned. Andrew's and Little Miss' pleas to the judge wins over the court and Martin is made a free robot. He builds a house nearby and visits Little Miss and Sir often. |
Richard Martin banishes Martin after granting his freedom. Martin builds a house on the beach and is separated from the Martin family. He does not see Richard again until he says goodbye to him on his deathbed.

Andrew is threatened by two men who try to destroy him when he is walking to the library. George Charney (little Miss' son) saves him. Little Miss makes George sponsor legislation to protect robots from abuse. |
