This Spoils the Ending
In the Graphic Novel In the Movie
Anastasia is a 24 year old Caucasian woman. Kat Valdez is a 50ish Latina.
Anastasia has three very successful ex-boyfriends but is currently not in a relationship. Kat is engaged to be married to a 20ish Bastian. It will be her fourth marriage. Kat's second husband ruined their marriage by selling a sex tape.
Anastasia is tired of dating and talks about arranged marriages. She nearly married a man at a Texas concert in 2010 after she was dumped by her boyfriend Lebron. She wants a normal man without an agenda who loves her and would not break her heart. Anastasia marries Guy as a spur of the moment thing; he is holding Parker's “marry me” sign while she left to relieve herself in the bushes outside. Kat is to be married to Bastian on stage during her concert. After finding out he has been cheating on her, she marries Charlie as he is holding Parker's “marry me” sign. Parker had handed Charlie the sign while she was taking selfies.
Guy is a 25 year old unmarried high school guidance counselor. Charlie is a high school teacher and single dad in his 50's with a daughter named Lou.
Anastasia finds a priest in the audience to perform the marriage. There is already a priest ready on stage for the marriage of Kat and Bastian
Janny is Ana's loyal assistant and sister. Guy went on stage to get Parker's sign autographed. But he married Anastasia when she said “yes” to Guy, making it appear as if he proposed to her. Guy didn't want to say no to avoid being thought of as gay. Kat found out a minute before she went out on stage to be married, that her fiance was cheating on her with Kat's assistant. Charlie married Kat on stage as she seemed to be having a nervous breakdown; he wanted to help her.
Anastasia's father is very controlling, but loves her. Kat's dad does not appear. Kat's manager tries to get Charlie to go along with the marriage for a while to manage the media frenzy.
Anastasia gives 97% of her income to charity. She has made $2 billion in the current decade and has $2 million in the bank. Kat works with a charity, nothing about donating her own money.
Parker tells Guy that they should have a threesome with Anastasia. Parker is a lesbian and has a crush on Anastasia. She is also a frequent editor of Anastasia's Wikipedia page. Parker Debbs recently broke up with her girlfriend; so she invites Charlie to the concert. Parker seems to have a crush on Kat but does not try to get her in bed.
Anastasia shares a bed at a hotel with Guy; she sleeps and he reads her autobiography so he can give her advice later on. Kat and Charlie part ways after the concert. She goes to her hotel and Charlie goes home. They continue to meet up at times when Kat flies home from trips overseas.
Anastasia runs away along with Janny, Parker and Guy just before her father arrives from Japan. They fly to her charity center in Nairobi Africa where they see Christian, Ana's ex-boyfriend trying to get her back. Kat and Charlie have a press conference the day after the wedding and justify their actions as a “moment” and a “leap of faith”. Charlie talks about how traditional marriage was like a business deal, but this marriage is not. Kat then flies off to London and Charlie stays home. They talk a lot on the phone while she is away.
Parker attacks Christian for being an ass, she gets slapped in the face. Guy knocks out Christian with a single punch. Bastian gets in Charlie's face after the Marry Me concert and insults him. Charlie does not attack him.
Anastasia tests Guy by offering him a cup of blood to drink; he drinks it. Parker eagerly accepts a cup as she is training for a vampire marathon. Anastasia's cup has Kool-Aid in it. Kat never tests Charlie. No vampire marathon.
Anastasia and Guy make out (no sex) in the truck while Parker drives them to another village. They decide they like each other. Charlie invites Kat to a school fall semi-formal dance to chaperone. They stay in Charlie's apartment that night and (maybe) have sex.
Janny goes into labor four weeks early while in the village. She gives birth at a local hospital near Nairobi. This does not happen in the film.
Janny tells Anastasia that she is not legally married to guy right after she gives birth and just before her father catches up to them at the hospital. Kat knew immediately after the concert that her wedding was not legal.
Guy intercepts Ana's father and they bond while on a walk around the hospital. Guy leads him back to Janny's room where the father asks why he led him around the hospital instead of taking him straight to his newborn grandson. Guys says it was so he did not have a scowl on his face the first time he saw his grandson. They shake hands. Kat's family is never mentioned.
Anastasia tells Guy that he is not horrible for marrying her. Guy says he is ready to give her some advice; he asks her to marry him. Charlie does not ask Kat to marry her again. He is insecure.
This is not in the book. Charlie invites Kat to a school fall semi-formal dance to chaperone. He encourages her not to go with Bastian to Puerto Rico.
This is not in the book. Charlie encourages Kat to do more of her life without staff, cooks, media, and assistants. Kat tells Charlie to go on social media.
This is not in the book. Bastian and Kat perform together at the Grammys. Kat holds his hand after the song, Charlie is clearly upset when watching the show on TV. Charlie goes to meet Kat after the award show. Charlie is concerned that social media says Kat is back with Bastian. Charlie is insecure and says he does not fit with Kat and their relationship will not work. Kat gets upset. Charlie leaves alone.
Ana and Guy appear to have a solid and trusting relationship. Kat writes a song for Charlie; it goes to #1 on the charts. They seem to be separated for a while.
Ana never considered getting back with any of her ex-boyfriends. Kat appears on Jimmy Fallon's show with Bastian. Jimmy suggests that Kat and Bastian will get back together. During a commercial break, Kat tells Bastian that they are through; she leaves the show during a commercial break.
This does not happen in the book. Kat rushes to the airport to fly to Peoria to see Charlie at a math competition. Kat begs Charlie to take her back by holding up a sign that says “marry me, again”. He says yes.
Anastasia and Guy marry. Several months later Anastasia and Janny are preparing for a charity concert; Anastasia is very pregnant. Kat and Charlie's real marriage is not shown.
After her marriage and before a pregnant Anastasia goes out to the stage, she tells Janny that she is glad she will never have to see another “Marry Me” sign again. Anastasia goes out onto stage to see Guy, Parker (and her girlfriend) and hundreds of fans holding “Marry Me” signs. This is not in the film.
Issue #6 is a 97 page story of Anastasia and Guy's wedding day. It involves a death threat by Turtle, Parker's long lost twin. Turtle's revenge plan is foiled by Parker, then Anastasia and Guy get officially married by the same priest who married them at the concert. Anastasia tells Guy that she is pregnant right after the wedding. This is not in the film.
