The story is framed through police reports and other documents. It is a normal story.
The high school is named Ewen Consolidated High School. It is Bates High School.
Carrie is slightly overweight with long, dirty blonde hair and many pimples. She is thin and has clear skin.
Chris refuses to attend detention and is suspended for three days and banned from the prom. Chris has a tantrum and Miss Collins slaps her across the face and forbids her from attending the prom.
Carrie's mother is large, fat and ugly with white hair and glasses. She is not ugly and has brownish-red hair.
Sue worries about Carrie at the prom but is also worried that she might be pregnant. Sue secretly goes to the prom to make sure everything is okay for Carrie.
Tina Blake replaces the ballots with fake ones so Carrie is elected prom queen. Norma Watson and Freddie rig the election after they make a deal with Chris.
After Carrie is covered in the pig's blood she runs from the gym and falls. She then returns and slams all the doors and turns on the sprinkler system, causing several people to be electrocuted. She then snaps and sets the gym on fire. After the blood covers her, she turns on the fire hose and it whips around and knocks people out. Miss Collins is killed by a falling rafter. A few people are electrocuted which causes the fire in the gym.
Chris and Billy are making love at the local road house when the disaster occurs at the gym. They escape the gym and witness the scene through a window.
Carrie goes home and her mother tells her she was raped and that is how Carrie was conceived. She goes home and takes a bath and cries in her mother's arms.
Carrie's mother stabs her in the shoulder. She stabs her in the back.
The book ends with a woman's letter describing her niece who is developing telekinesis. It didn't happen.
Carrie wipes out most of the town on her rampage after the school prank. The damage is limited to her school.
Carrie makes her own prom gown--a heavy velvet number in keeping with shyness Carrie makes her own prom gown--a chic slinky number out of character
The people at the prom are actually laughing at Carrie when the the blood is dumped on her; sort of a mass hysteria; one student even trips her before she runs out. It is only in Carrie's imagination that everyone is laughing at her when the blood is dumped on her at the prom. Only Norma Watson pretends to laugh at her.
Tommy asks Carrie to the prom at school and after determining that he isn't tricking her, she accepts. After Tommy asks Carrie to the prom she runs away from him. Later it is revealed she said no. Tommy then asks Carrie again at her house.
This does not happen. Miss Collins confronts both Sue and Tommy at school on why Sue wants Tommy to take Carrie to the prom.
Billy is portrayed as a sociopath who never seems to smile or laugh. Billy seems to be a goofy idiot always grinning and laughing.
Billy and his friends cut the throats of pigs for the blood. This scene is not shown.
In the book, Carrie's gym teacher is Ms. Desjardin. In the movie, she is Ms. Collins.
Carrie collapses in the road house parking lot where Sue finds her. Carrie reads her mind to find out Sue knew nothing about the prank. Carrie decides not to kill her. This doesn't happen because Carrie is already dead. Sue escapes the gym carnage because Miss Collins kicks her out.
Carrie dies from her shoulder stab wound in the parking lot as she calls out for her mother. She died in her house.
Sue runs away from the roadhouse and collapses when she has her period. She writes a memoir called, "My Name is Susan Snell." asking people not to forget what happened, so it doesn't happen again. Sue dreams of visiting Carrie's grave where her house once stood. A bloody hand reaches up as she places flowers on the grave. She wakes up screaming in her mother's arms.
Carrie stops her mother's heart, killing her. After she is stabbed she makes the knives in the kitchen fly through the air and kill her mother.
After killing her mother, Carrie goes to the road house where her father raped her mother and Chris and Billy are. Carrie is guilty and grief stricken and collapses the house on herself and her mother, killing them both.
Chris and Billy hear about the fire from their friend are are trying to leave town when they see Carrie. She causes their car to crash into the road house, killing them. They are driving from the prom and they try to run Carrie over. She flips the car, causing their deaths.
