   Set in Virginia. Set in Oregon.
   Josh is mentioned frequently, but is not present in the book. No mention of Josh at all.
   Dan Covery sends the three girls and their Korean grandmother to South Korea on vacation six weeks prior to Lara Jean's first year of college; the trip takes place after the end of the book. The book does not have details of the trip other than the plans they made for it prior to the trip and how it interferes with Peter's plans to socialize with Lara Jean during the summer. The film starts with Dan, Trina and the girls in South Korea on vacation the summer after Lara Jean's junior year. Dan tells his daughters that he wants to marry Trina, the girls approve. While at a "love locks" bridge in Seoul, Kitty meets a young Korean boy who takes their photo. She exchanges letters with him after the vacation.
   Peter is going to UVA on an athletic scholarship. Peter and Lara Jean tour the UVA campus. Peter is going to Stanford. Lara Jean has applied to Stanford but is waiting for an acceptance letter. She dreams of rooming with Peter, marrying him and starting a family.
   Lara Jean is accepted at the College of William and Mary, but decides to go to UNC instead. Peter does not like that it is twice as far away from UVA. Peter's family cannot afford to give up a scholarship nor can they afford out of state tuition in North Carolina if Peter wants to go to the same college as Lara Jean. Lara Jean is accepted at Berkley. Peter is happy with this, but Lara Jean decides to go to NYC instead. This makes Peter unhappy.
   Margot brings her boyfriend Ravi home to Virginia to visit; she plans on him sleeping with her in her bedroom. Dan had the guest room made up and is furious that Margot wants to share a bed with her boyfriend. Ravi takes the guest room instead, Dan appreciates this. Margot does not like the changes in the house with Trina living there; she argues with Trina about dog fur and cleaning the house. Margot visits home, but does not bring her boyfriend. Margot is less accepting of Trina, but not to the extent of the book. She knows Trina will make her dad happy.
   Lara Jean sees Peter's dad at a lacrosse match. She knows he is Peter's dad as he looks a lot like him. She does not tell Peter that she met him until later. Peter meets up with his dad but is reluctant to spend any time with him. Lara Jean says he should. Peter has lunch with his dad and it looks like they might spend more time together. Peter does not look like his dad.
   Chris does not attend the prom with a date. During a game of "truth or dare", Lucas dares Chris to go to prom with Trevor. She does go to prom with Trevor and they start dating after.
   Stormy gives Lara Jean a valuable pink diamond ring. She does not.
   Dao does not appear in the book. Kitty and her friend Dao have a little disagreement over Harry Potter and other stuff.
   When Stormy dies, she has a funeral in Rhode Island. Lara Jean speaks at a memorial service for Stormy in Belleview nursing home. This does not happen.
   Peter and a girl named Ashanti Dickson are prom king and queen. Lara Jean is glad it isn't Gen; as the prom king and queen dance together. Peter Kazinsky and Emily Nussbam are the prom king and queen.
   Peter and Lara Jean meet some friends after prom at a restaurant. Her friends surprise her with a birthday party. The song “If Your Were Here” from 16 Candles plays and Lara Jean loves everything. Lara Jean sneaks Peter into her bedroom after her “curfew”. They make out in her bed, but when she starts to take off Peter's clothes, he stops her. Peter resents her going to college in NY and thinks their relationship will not survive, so he dumps her on prom night.
   After sending the deposit for William and Mary, Lara Jean is accepted at UNC. She tours the UNC campus with Chris; both their cell phones are dead so she is unable to tell her dad that she will be late going home. She gets home at 3am and her dad is very upset; but less upset when he learns she got into UNC. This does not happen in the film.
   When Peter learns about the trip to South Korea during the summer, he is concerned because this will give them only two weeks together after she returns home. This does not happen in the film as the vacation in South Korea took place prior to her senior year.
   Lara Jean and most of her high school class rent houses on the beach. Lara Jean brings Peter to her bedroom for sex. Peter is upset about his relationship with his father, Lara Jean's choice of college and other stuff. He refuses to have sex with her and leaves the house. Peter refuses to have sex with Lara Jean after prom. He leaves her house.
   Peter's mom tells Lara Jean that Peter wants to transfer to UNC to be with Lara Jean after a year in UVA. Peter has a scholarship at UVA, but would have to pay very expensive out of state tuition to be with Lara Jean at UNC. She asks Lara Jean to break up with Peter so that Peter can concentrate on his studies and lacrosse at UVA. This does not happen in the film.
   Lara Jean gets drunk at Trina's bachelorette party, tells Peter that he needs to stay at UVA and they should not have a long distance relationship; she breaks up with him. This does not happen in the film
   Peter shows up at the wedding; Lara Jean tells him she wants to stay together. Peter agrees. Peter gives back her yearbook with a new love letter contract in it. Kitty lures Lara Jean back to the wedding tent after everyone leaves after the wedding. She reads the “meet-cute” love letter Peter leaves for her. He promises to love her always and forever. They sign it like a contract.
   Lara Jean and Peter go out at night to watch a Perseids meteor shower. Peter tells her about the time he first saw her in 6th grade. Peter and Lara Jean sleep together the night of her dad's wedding while her dad and Trina are away on their honeymoon.
   Peter attends UVA and Lara Jean attends UNC. Lara Jean attends NYU, Peter attends Stanford; she has high hopes for the future.
   Dan dances with each of his daughters to Stevie Wonder's "Isn't she lovely". He then dances with Trina and later with Haven. He does not. Dan has the typical dance with his bride and later the guests join them on the dance floor. Haven does not appear in the film.
   Dan decides to propose to Trina while on a hike to a river. Peter, Lara Jean and Kitty sneak (Dan knows) to the river ahead of them to make a video of the proposal. Trina gags on a cough drop when Dan proposes, but she happily says yes. Lara Jean sees her Dad at Trina's house across the street through a window proposing to her.
