This doesn't happen. Bastian is chased by bullies prior to entering the bookstore.
Bastian's father is deep in despair over the loss of his wife. Bastian himself is the one who is sad. His father encourages him to get over it and move on.
The Southern Oracle character does not have a physical form. It is represented by pair of glowing blue sphinx creatures.
The Childlike empress is dressed in a loose garment like a smock. Her hair is white. She has brown hair and wears a formal dress that looks much like a wedding dress.
Atreyu meets Falkor when he releases him from a web, saving him from "Ygramul the Many", a gigantic Spider. It is Falkor that rescues Atreyu when he is sinking in the swamp and from Gmork's attack.
Atreyu and Falkor are blown apart by the four Wind Giants. The are separated by the Nothing.
When Atreyu meets Gmork he is chained to a wall and dying. When they meet Atreyu fights off Gmork's attack and kills him with a sharp rock.
Bastian is overweight. He is quite skinny.
Atreyu has blue hair and green skin. He looks normal. He has brown hair and tanned skin. He looks a little like a native american.
Artax can speak. He is mute.
The land in the book is Fantastica. It is Fantasia.
The Nothing not only destroys Fantastica but approaches people who have lost their faith and have given up on hoping, and then the people have the sudden urge to jump into the Nothing and be transformed in human lies. It appears as a giant formation of stormclouds and according to Gmork, it was created from the people who have no hopes or dreams, causing it to destroy Fantasia.
Bastion fails to name the Childlike Empress when she is expecting Bastion to, so she finds the Old Man of Wandering Mountain, where she is eventually named. Bastion names the Childlike Empress while Atreyu is with her in the Ivory Tower, removing the Old Man of Wandering Mountain scene.
Falkor nearly dies from diving underwater to grab Orien, the gem Atreyu loses when separated from Falkor by the Nothing, but is saved by Orien. Atreyu loses Orien.
Falkor is (and looks) like a dragon. The era of technology prevented Falkor to be portrayed normally, rendering the appearence of a sock-puppet with the head of a small dog.
Bastion is granted with the power to wish from the Childlike Empress. Orien lets Bastion wish.
Bastian gives The Childlike Empress the name Moonchild. No reason is given as to why he chose it. He also gives her that name because it was his mother's name.
Bastian ends up in Fantascia at the end. The Childlike Empress begs him to save her. The ending has Bastian riding on Falkor and chasing down the kids who bullied him in the beginning.
