Ursula only takes Ariel's voice after signing the contract.

In addition to taking her voice, Ursula robs Ariel of her memory that she must get Eric to kiss her to stay human. A contract in blood is made when Ariel plucks a scale from her tail which Ursula puts in her caldron. |
Sebastian and Founder help Ariel to the surface where she swims to shore. She interacts with Scuttle for a while until she covers herself in old canvas.

Ariel is captured in a fisherman's net and brought aboard a boat where Scuttle talks to her.

The fisherman brings Ariel to a fishing village after finding her some cloth to cover herself. Villagers bathe Ariel and give her nice clothes. Ariel tries to eat the soap. |
Ariel is found by Eric but sees that Ariel could not have been his rescuer after he realizes that she cannot speak.

The villagers get Eric so he can meet her as they believe she might be his rescuer. After realizing Ariel cannot speak, he directs the villagers to care for her.

Ariel knows she needs to kiss the prince within three days.
