In the Book In the Movie
Joseph Leland is a retired cop. His name is changed to John McClain and he is an active New York city police officer.
Leland is on his way to Los Angeles to visit his Daughter. McClain is visiting his estranged wife.
The setting is the Klaxxon Oil company building. The action takes place at the Nakatomi building.
Leiland's daughter Stephanie Gennaro is in a relationship with Harry Ellis. McClain's wife, Holly Gennaro, has a friendly relationship with Ellis.
The purpose of the terrorist takeover was to allow the West German radical group to uncover an illegal arms shipment Klaxxon was making to a Chilean dictatorship. They are only acting like terrorists to get the power shut down by the FBI so they can break into the safe and steal over 640 million dollars in bearer bonds.
Leland is washing his feet at the time the terrorists come into the party. Someone told him it would keep him from being tired at the end of the day. McClaine hated flying and someone sitting next to him suggested he remove his socks and make fists with his toes in the carpet to feel better when he landed.
Sgt. Al Powell is a young man of 22. He is middle aged.
Leland is picked up and brought to the Klaxxon building by an older nameless limo driver. He isn't heard from again. McClaine is picked up by a young driver named Argyle. He is seen throughout the movie because he is waiting in the basement for McClaine to come down.
Leland strikes up a flirtation with a Stewardess as he arrives in LA. He gets her phone number and talks to her via CB radio while he is in the building. A stewardess stares McClaine up and down when he is getting off the plane. Nothing else happens.
The head of the Klaxxon oil company is Mr. Rivers. He is shot in the chest by Gruber. The head of Nakatomi Company. He is shot in the head by Gruber.
Joe suffers many serious injuries and it is unclear if he will survive. McClain is hurt but survives to appear in many more movies.
When Karl attempts to shoot Leland at the end he gets off a shot and shoots and kills police chief Dwayne T. Robinson. Al Powell then pulls his gun and shoots Karl dead. When Karl pulls his gun he is shot before he gets a single shot off.
Leland shoots Gruber and he crashes through a window. He grabs Stephanie by the wrist and pulls her out the window with him. McClaine shoots Hans, and as he crashes out the window he grabs Holly's wrist. McClaine is able to unclasp the new rolex Holly is wearing releasing Gruber's grip and causing him to fall to his death. Holly is saved.
