   The Ents chose to go to war. They didn't initially but Pippin tricked them into it.

   Theoden sends his people to be safe in Dunharrow. He sends them to Helm's Deep where he knows the battle will be fought.
   Aragorn voluntarily chose to leave the king and his men when he took the Paths of the Dead on his way to Minas Trith. He fell over a cliff during a battle and was separated from the others.
   Hama dies at the gate of Helm's Deep. He is killed during the Warg Riders attack.
