In the Book	In the Movie
The Martians are first seen as masses of luminous gas from space, then crash into the Earth in large, cylinder-shaped receptacles which the tripods emerge from.	The Martians arrive on Earth via small, individual pods during what looks like a lightning storm and occupy their tripod machines which are already buried underground.
The Martians are described as large, oblong tentacled creatures.	The Martians are vaguely humanoid in shape.
The story takes place in England.	The film is set in the United States.
The Martians eventually start using bombs which release a highly dense black smoke capable of killing everything it touches.	The Martians are not seen to use this weapon.
The Martians emerge from their tripods and use their tentacles to puncture dead bodies and drain their blood to try and assimilate it into their own system.	The Martians use mechanisms on their tripods to extract blood from human bodies. They are only seen using it to spray the red weeds.
The Martians are incapable of coping with the bacteria and diseases that they are afflicted with via their draining of human blood, and begin to die out.	Because the Martians are never seen to consume human blood, it is assumed that they were infected by airborne or waterborne strains of diseases.
