This Spoils the Ending
In the Book In the TV Show
The book starts with Mickey being very busy defending people whose homes are being foreclosed upon. Season 2 starts with Mickey getting beat up in a garage by two men. It then shifts to three months earlier as Mickey is enjoying the fame that came with his last case.
Mickey is working out of his Lincoln SUV as usual, he is no longer in Jerry Vincent's office. He later rents office space. Mickey is still working out of Jerry Vincent's office since the activities of Season 1.
This does not happen in the book. Louis Ross Roulet is the murderer of Martha Renteria, not Russell Lawson. There is a subplot concerning the conviction reversal and retrial of Jesus Menendez. A man named Russell Lawson is revealed to be the murderer of Martha Renteria. Mickey uses Glory Days to set up Lawson and he is arrested for the Renteria murder.
This subplot is not in the book. Cisco meets with an old biker gang member (Kaz) after getting out of prison. He vouches for him with the Road Saints biker club. But Kaz is a ATF informant. Cisco later helps the Road Saints traffic stolen guns and supplies Kaz with forged ID and passport to disappear.
Lisa Trammel is a client of Mickey's. She is a divorced single mom whose home has been foreclosed on. Mickey does not like her as she is a “nuisance client”. Mickey meets Lisa Trammel, a chef/owner of a restaurant while at lunch with Maggie. Maggie leaves early; Mickey and the chef spend the night together. Mickey later offers to help with the restraining order against her issued by Bondurant. Mickey continues to have feelings for Lisa throughout the show.
Lisa Trammel's house is being foreclosed upon. She is part of a group investigating and protesting against Mitchell Bondurant's foreclosure mill Lisa Trammel is in a dispute with Mitchell Bondurant over new construction in the neighborhood.
Mickey is very insistent about being paid on time for his services. Mickey is willing to represent Lisa Trammel pro bono over a restraining order from Bondurant. He is sleeping with her on occasion at the time.
Mickey hired a newly licensed lawyer, Jennifer “Bullocks” Aronson. She will assisting in the murder trial after working on foreclosure cases. She is good at her job. Mickey is mainly assisted by his 2nd ex-wife Lorna in case preparation and running his office. Izzy the driver also assists in the office.
Lorna is Mickey's office assistant. She is not working towards a law degree. Lorna is working towards a law degree and has to get a form signed by a certain law professor. Lorna goes to the law professor for a signature on a form allowing Mickey to be her mentor. She tears into the professor for making a pass at her when she was a student in one of his classes. He looks apologetic and says she was the best student in his class.
Mickey continues to have romantic feelings for his 1st ex-wife Maggie. They spend the night together a few times. Mickey asks her to marry him again, she refuses. Mickey has feelings for Lisa Trammel. Mickey and Maggie hook up after he gets out of the hospital and learning that Dahl was working with those who had him assaulted at the garage.
Nothing about a wedding in the book. Cisco gives Lorna a guest list for their wedding with three names on it. He doesn't want to associate with anyone in his past anymore. She approves. They get married later on.
Lorna calls Mickey and says Lisa Trammel was arrested for the murder of Mitchell Bondurant. This happens very early in the book Lisa calls Mickey and tells her she was arrested for murdering Mitchell Bondurant. This does not happen until the end of episode 2 of 10.
Rae is not in the book. Mickey meets Izzy's girlfriend Rae. Mickey does not trust Rae, but he is willing to give her a second or third chance.
The case file and power of attorney between Trammel and Haller is stolen from Haller's Lincoln. Herbert Dahl paid Rojas (Mickey's driver) $400 to gain access to the Lincoln to steal Trammel's case file and power of attorney. Mickey does not fire Rojas. The case file and power of attorney between Trammel and Haller is stolen from Haller's Lincoln. Izzy thinks Rae stole the keys to the Lincoln. Mickey says Dahl was the one to steal the Trammel file. He continues to trust Izzy.
Louis Opparizio is served a subpoena without any deception. Lorna gets a former client (Sam), who owes Mickey money, to build a website to attract Alex Grant. Alex Grant meets with Lorna and Izzy at an art gallery to view a panting he is interested in. The painting is revealed to be a summons to appear in court.
Louis Opparizio is not seen until he is called to testify at trial. He is a major character in the novel concerning Mickey's attempt at finding another person who is responsible for the murder of Bondurant. Alex Grant wants his hearing to squash the subpena to the trial to be held in private. Mickey shows him an email from Bondurant threatening Grant with exposure of his shady business dealings.
Maggie does not plan on moving to San Diego. Maggie is offered a good job in the DA's office in San Diego. She tells Mickey after they spend the night together. She tells him that she loves him, but it will never work. She is already selling her house.
Jennifer Aronson is 2nd chair at trial with Mickey. Mickey's driver only drives. Lorna is only an office assistant. Lorna hires four temps from law school to run the office while she is in court with Mickey at the defense table. Izzy also helps out in the office.
The murder weapon (a hammer) was found a few weeks after the murder but prior to the trial. It is the same kind of hammer that is missing from Trammel's tool set in her garage. It is circumstantial evidence. They know that a hammer matching the wounds of the murder victim was missing from Trammel's garage. The hammer is found after the trial starts and introduced as evidence. It has a serial number and belongs to Trammel.
This is not in the novel. Izzy has been trying to build a dance studio, but is having trouble with the rent and deposit.
Mickey's mother does not appear in the book Mickey's mother shows up for his birthday party and stays for a while. She is an actress and is in town for an audition. Mickey invites her to watch him in court.
This does not happen in the book. Henry Dahl testifies that Trammel wanted to stop Bondurant. She claimed (on tape) that she knew everything about the murder victim.
She does not. Lisa Trammel testifies in her own defense.
Jennifer Aronson testifies at trial, about the shady workings of Bondurant's foreclosure mill, after which she sits with Mickey with the defense. Jennifer Aronson is not in the TV series.
Louis Opparizio takes the fifth after Mickey implies he is connected to organized crime and had a motive to kill Bondurant. This is why the book is titled, “The Fifth Witness”. This is the key to the jury's verdict. Alex Grant is called to the stand. Mickey shows that he is a person with connections to organized crime who might have motive to kill Bondurant. Grant takes the fifth during his testimony, which suggests to the jury that Grant may have had Bondurant murdered. Haller also shows evidence that a van belonging to Grant's ex-con father who had reason to kill Bondurant was near the scene, but there was no evidence that Lisa Trammel was ever at the crime scene.
This does not happen in the book. Rene, one of Lisa Trammel's cooks identifies Walter Kim, the building inspector, as a man who claimed to be a health inspector to gain access to Lisa Trammel's business, home and garage. Mickey realizes that Walter Kim possibly had a motive to kill Bondurant after seeing his signature on inspections of faulty workmanship in some of Alex Grant's construction projects. Walter Kim has since disappeared.
The jury returns a not guilty verdict in 5 minutes. It appears to take longer.
There is a movie deal being prepared about Lisa Trammel, possibly with Julia Roberts playing the part of Lisa. This was not in the TV series.
This was not in the book. Cisco finds evidence that Walter Kim was at the Bondurant murder scene as a portion of his glass inspection mirror was found at the scene.
This does not happen in the book. After the trial Lisa Trammel goes to Mickey's house where they have sex, again.
This does not happen in the book. DA Andy Freeman visits Mickey after the trial and gives him a coffee mug gift. She has no bad feelings about his behavior at the trial. She tells him that the police found blood on Walter Kim's shoes. She says Walter Kim is presumed dead and the feds are all over Alex Grant for fraud.
Mickey sees Lisa at a party with kids and notices that the kids are staring up at balloons. He realizes that Lisa was able to get Bondurant to look up at the ceiling, distracting him, so she could kill him with a hammer blow to the top of the head even though she was much shorter than the victim. While at the beach, Mickey realizes that Lisa Trammel's ex-husband (Jeff) was actually in town when he told him that he was in Mexico. Mickey finds out the man who Mickey met was not her husband, but an out of work actor. Mickey said it doesn't make sense that Jeff does not get the divorce in a community property state and get half of her place. Mickey thinks Lisa killed her husband and buried him in her garden. The show ends with Mickey believing that Lisa did not kill Bondurant
Lisa Trammel later calls Mickey begging her to represent her as the police are digging up her garden. He refuses. Mickey tells her he is going to run for District Attorney. Lisa tells Mickey she should have arranged for him to be more badly beaten. Lorna calls the police with information that Trammel may have a body buried in her garden. Lorna also suspects Lisa had arranged for Mickey to be beaten up. Nothing about Mickey running for DA.
This does not happen in the book. Mickey is nearly run over by a car that he thinks might belong to Alex Grant.
This does not happen in the book, The Fifth Witness. Mickey meets a new potential client in jail, Julian Lacrosse. Julian tells Mickey that he was arrested for the murder of Giselle Dallinger. Mickey goes to the morgue and sees that it is Gloria Dayton (Glory Days).
