In the Book In the Movie
   The book is set in Virginia. The film is set in Oregon.
   Lara Jean finishes the love letter for Peter that she started in the previous book. They have not gotten back together or dated for real yet. At the Korean New Year party Margo, Lara Jean and Kitty talk to Haven. Haven sees a picture of Peter and Lara Jean together. When Lara Jean says she broke up with Peter, Haven is impressed as she says she would never let a boy like Peter get away. Peter and Lara Jean are a new couple at the start of the film. At the Korean New Year party when Kitty and Lara Jean are talking to Haven and she tells her that Peter is her boyfriend. Haven shows them a still of the hot tub video. Haven knows who Peter is, she is impressed when Lara Jean says she is the girl in the video but they were only making out and not having sex.
   After the Korean New Year's Eve party, Lara Jean goes to Peter's house to give him the love letter. He acts cold to her and wants to know why she is trying to apologize to him. He takes the letter from her hand, they argue a bit, Peter plays hard to get, then they decide to get back together again. They had already decided to get back together at the end of the previous film.
   They go to a movie then a cheap restaurant for their first official date. They go to a nice restaurant, then launch a small paper hot air balloon at the park with their names on it.
   Margot tried to get back together with Josh, but he turned her down. She is very upset. He just wants to be friends with the Covey family. Margot has already returned to college in Scotland prior to the start of the film. She helped her younger sisters prepare for the Korean party in their hanbok dresses over the phone. Josh is not in the film.
   Josh Sanderson is still a friend of the Covey family. He has a new girlfriend as he does not think things can work out with Margot. Josh Sanderson does not appear in the film. He is mentioned once at Fakesgiving.
   Lara Jean asks if having sex with Josh hurt the first time they did it. Margot said it hurt the first few times. The sisters do not talk about sex in the film.
   Lara Jean and Peter write up a new contract. Peter will not be late, he will give her a ride anytime she wants and always tell the truth. Lara Jean will not make Peter do arts and crafts and does not have to go to all of his parties/games. Peter does not have to call her every night. They will not break each other's hearts. No new contract.
   Chris tells Lara Jean that the hot tub video is on Instragram. Peter and her are identified by name in the caption and it says they are having sex. Margot reports the video to Instragram and Peter makes threats to Instagram about a lawsuit and then the video is removed. The video and the problems it causes were only referred to in the previous film.
   Lara Jean's father is upset that she did not tell him about the video. The school officials step in to stop the other students from harassing Peter and Lara Jean with posters. Dr. Covey never finds out about the hot tub video.
   Lara Jean made a dating profile for her dad for a dating website. When she tells her dad about it, he is not pleased and tells her to not post it. This does not happen in the film.
   Lara Jean and Peter make out in the tree house. As he is touching her breast outside of her bra, she worries that Peter prefers Gen's larger breasts. Lara Jean is slim with small breasts. Peter and Lara Jean never get past kissing. Lara Jean is full figured while Gen is slim.
   This does not happen in the book. On Valentines' Day in school, some boys will arrange for an a cappella group to sing to their girlfriends. Lara Jean was told to expect this from Peter, but it does not happen. She is disappointed.
   Gen volunteers in a program that mentors younger kids. Lara Jean works as an intern at a nursing home. John Ambrose arrives there shortly after with her love letter. John is a white boy with blonde hair. Stormy, one of the nursing home residents, is his great grandmother. Previously John wrote back to Lara Jean after getting her original love letter. She wrote back to him. Gen is not shown to be a volunteer for any organization. John is white in the first film, he is a black 17 year old boy in this film. No mention of any relationship to Stormy. He had previously shown up in the mid-credit's scene in the first film. John Ambrose first shows up to see Lara Jean as they both volunteer at the nursing home.
   Lara Jean, Peter, Gen, Trevor, John and Chris meet at the tree house to open the time capsule. they also decide to play a game called Assassin. They each draw a piece of cardboard with another friend's name on it, then it is a game of tag. The winner gets any wish fulfilled within reason. The friends meet at the tree house, but Gen arrives uninvited. No game of Assassin. Peter is upset with Lara Jean for not telling John they were dating. Peter generally acts like a jerk at the tree house.
   Peter is the one who meets with Lara Jean in the tree house to talk about why Gen is behaving badly. Gen has been very upset because her father cheats on his wife; most recently with an 18yo woman. This is why she is always calling Peter for support. Gen admits to posting the hot tub video and harassing Lara Jean with screen shot posters at school. Gen has long been mad at Lara Jean for kissing Peter in the 7th grade. The two girls do not resolve their differences. Lara Jean sees Peter hugging Gen; she gets upset and breaks up with Peter during a school trip to an aquarium. Gen meets Lara Jean at the tree house. Gen says Peter is crazy about Lara Jean. Gen needs Peter's company because her parents are breaking up. Gen and Lara Jean bury the hatchet and stop being enemies.
   Lara Jean wins the Assassin game. Lara Jean and Peter meet alone at the treehouse. Her wish is for Peter and her to go back to how things were when they were in love. They embrace and Lara Jean knows this is the night they become real. Lara Jean kisses John Ambrose at the nursing home party, but realizes she wants Peter back. Peter arrives to give Lara Jean a ride home after the dance at the nursing home. Lara Jean realizes that they will hurt each other even if they love each other.
