The treehouse is a "treehouse of the mind", Ig and Merrin stumble upon it when they were hiking on the woods, and although they searched for months and months, returning to the exact same place, they never found it again. (the treehouse was the one who found them). |
The treehouse is a physical place, discovered by Ig when he was a boy. He and Merrin spent a lot of time there.

The final scene between Ig and Lee is at the spot of Merrin's death.
|
It is a full year between Merrin's murder and the current events in the book. Ig has been cleared of all charges through a lack of evidence but everyone is still sure it was him. |
It is assumed in the movie that current events are fairly recent after the murder since the investigation is ongoing. Reporters are in town and Lee, as Igs lawyer, is trying to build a case for Igs defense. |
Ig is restored to health by the flames and tells Terry that he needs to lie about what has happened here; Eric and Lee are both dead, and Terry needs to believe that Ig died too. Ig then goes to the cherry tree that once held the Treehouse of the Mind to find that a line of fire has reached it from the foundry. The treehouse itself has reappeared beyond the flames and Ig climbs up into the burning tree, enters the treehouse, and finds a wedding party within and Merrin awaiting him. |
Ig actually dies, and is reunited with Merrin in an after-life realm.
