Theo is an Oxford Historian. Theo works for the government in the Ministry of Energy.
   Theo's ex-wife Julian is a combo of the novel characters - hoe's ex-wife and a former student.
Theo has a cousin named Xan, who is the warden and dictator of England. Theo remembers visiting him as a child and the contrast of the rich and poor family. In the movie this character is replaced by Nigel - no relation to Theo - to get the travel Visa.
The book explores politics and the ruling of Xan in depth. Nigel is only explored in the one scene, attempting to get the Visa.
