This doesn't happen. Phillips keeps the news of kidnappings in the area a secret from his wife.
The Alabama was in the middle of a "fire and boat" drill when the pirates first attacked. They were in a "pirate" drill when attacked.
The pirates all wore sandals. Some of the pirates had barefeet and stepped on broken glass set by the crew as a booby trap.
Phillips never planned to sacrifice himself for his crew. He told the pirates to shoot him if they had to instead of hurting his crew.
Phillips and the pirates spent five days on the rescue boat. He was there for 36 hours.
