Aragorn does not want to reveal to the city that he is the king after the Battle of Pelennor. You see Gimli lounging in the Steward's chair while smoking his pipe.
Gandalf told the story of Deagol finding the Ruling Ring and how Smeagol killed him for it. It was in Fellowship when he told him. Gollum's history with the ring opens the film as a prologue.
Sam and Frodo remain together on the road until they are separated when Frodo is taken into the Tower of Cirith Ungol. Frodo becomes upset with Sam for offering to carry the Ring when they read the top of the stairs. He sends him away.
Gollum gets the ring back from Frodo at the Cracks of Doom. He then slips and falls in destroying the ring in the process. Frodo and Gollum fight for the ring and they both fall. Frodo is able to grab hold of the side and is saved, while Gollum falls into the lava and is killed and the ring is destroyed.
