   Escalante suffers inflammation of the gallbladder at Garfield High School and drives himself home. He later goes to the hospital. Escalante suffers a heart attack while teaching night English courses to adults.
   Several of Escalante's old students pressure him into giving him his car keys so they can repaint it at a reduced price. Escalante's students steal his car and paint it before returning it to him.
   No student who did not understand multiplication was taught calculus in a year, let alone pass the test. Students who did not know the multiplication tables at the beginning of the year nevertheless passed the AP test.
   Escalante's first AP class was in 1978, and it only had five students at its end. Escalante's first AP class was in 1982, with few dropouts.
