Inman is shot during the battle when he returns to save Swimmer. Swimmer's importance to Inman isn't shown and he is shot in the crossfire.
Inman sees more slaves than he is used to during his time in the Civil War. He starts to believe that the war is about letting rich whites keep their slaves. That is part of his reason for deserting. He only deserts so he can return to Ada.
Ada remains in North Carolina to avoid being forced to marry a rich man in Charleston. She stays in Cold Mountain because she is waiting for Inman to return.
There are many black characters. No black actor plays a major role.
